Chrome setup

Use this path when you want AnyWebMCP in your regular Chrome profile. Chrome still treats WebMCP as experimental, so you must enable it and connect your agent to the browser.

How it works

How the pieces connect

AnyWebMCP adds purpose-built tools to supported pages. Chrome exposes those tools through WebMCP, and Chrome DevTools MCP connects Codex or another MCP-capable agent to the same browser session. Loading the extension alone does not connect an agent.

AnyWebMCP extension Chrome WebMCP Chrome DevTools MCP Your agent
  1. Get the extension

Download openwebmcp-extension-<version>.zip from GitHub Releases and unzip it. The folder you load must contain manifest.json.

To build from source instead, install Node.js 20 or newer, clone the public repository, then run npm install and npm run build. The extension will be in packages/extension/dist.

  2. Turn on WebMCP in Chrome

Use Chrome 150 or newer. Open chrome://flags/#enable-webmcp-testing, set WebMCP testing to Enabled, and relaunch Chrome.

  3. Load the extension

Open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, choose Load unpacked, and select the extension folder.

  4. Connect Chrome DevTools MCP to Codex

Install Node.js LTS and npm if they are not already available. Then add the Chrome DevTools MCP server to Codex:

codex mcp add chrome-devtools -- npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latest --autoConnect --categoryExperimentalWebmcp

If you do not use the Codex CLI, add a local STDIO server in Settings → MCP servers. Use npx as the command and the remaining values above as its arguments, then restart Codex.

  5. Allow remote debugging

Open chrome://inspect/#remote-debugging and enable remote debugging. Keep Chrome open. When Chrome DevTools MCP asks to connect, review the prompt and choose Allow.

Security note: a debugging connection can control pages in this Chrome profile. Enable it only for tools you trust, and turn it off when you finish.

  6. Open a supported site and verify the tools

Visit x.com or www.linkedin.com, then reload the tab. Ask Codex to list the WebMCP tools available on the page. It should find the matching AnyWebMCP tools from the website catalog.
